Reflections
This first artifact, part of a reflective paper, supports the first Illinois Professional Teaching Standard, relating to Teaching Diverse Students. I chose this reflection because it is a summation of my experiences as a minority and how I plan to use those experiences in my future classroom in order to reach out to all students. Within the reflection, I have explained how my experiences in minority situations affected me, and will guide my future lesson plans and classroom interactions. I believe that this artifact is an appropriate representation of the first standard due to its relevance to my plans to incorporate the diversity of students in order to best prepare lessons that will be meaningful for all students. It also examines the aspect of the standard that focuses on me, as an educator, understanding the diverse characteristics of each of my students, as it describes a variety of experiences, all within different social, cultural and ethnic groups. This reflection demonstrates how I have changed my philosophy of education to include the vitality of classroom inclusiveness, and multicultural curriculum. Through doing this reflection, I have been able to develop a variety of ideas to bring multicultural education into the classroom and into the lives of my students. As a growing teacher, I hope to utilize the lessons that I learned and wrote about in this reflection, as well as choosing to implement the ideas in my classroom.
