Reflections
The first artifact that I chose to support Standard Two, Content Area and Pedagogical Knowledge, is an English paper that I wrote on The Tragical History of Dr. Faustus, by Christopher Marlowe. I chose this paper because it demonstrates my ability to analyze central concepts and content area literacy. In the paper, my main focus was on the main theme of Faustus’ deal with the Devil, and his resulting desire to repent and rediscover religion. It was important to analyze the main theme of the play, as well as accurately describe it while writing this paper. The play itself is a piece of English literature, and has been used as a base for several other variations of the Faustian drama. Within the paper, I had to demonstrate my knowledge of the basic analytical paper format, including close reading and quote explication. Equally important was the ability to read and understand the play, and it’s place in history. This artifact displays my growth throughout my time as an English Major at the University of Illinois, as I developed my analytical skills during classes that I took. As a teacher, this artifact represents my continued growth and increasing knowledge throughout my career. It also demonstrates my desire to explore literature, and to help others find the ability to learn as well.
