Reflections
This artifact is a lesson plan I wrote to explicitly teach an aspect of writing, introduction paragraphs, to 7th grade students. It was their first introduction to that way of writing, and is meant to provide a solid base for continuing writing skills and development. I chose this artifact to represent Standard Six because it displays my knowledge of writing introduction paragraphs and writing skills, and also demonstrates my ability to teach in a clear way to address student writing needs. This lesson provides a way for students to acquire knowledge about the proper parts of an introduction paragraph, allowing them to format their writing assignments in a clear and coherent manner. I believe that this lesson shows how I have developed through being placed at J. W. Eater Junior High in Rantoul, IL, working with a very multicultural student population. Through working with these students, it was necessary to find the right topic that would be applicable to each of their needs and backgrounds, and that they could easily relate to. Teaching the lesson showed me how I have become more comfortable with teaching fundamentals to students, and how I am now capable of formatting lessons that speak to students and allow them to learn. As I continue to become a teacher, I hope to use this same method of teaching to reach out to other students and increase their knowledge of writing skills.
